Vitesse Purchases Silicon Perspective's First Encounter

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2001--Silicon Perspective Corporation® (SPC), the leading supplier of IC design tools for silicon virtual prototypes, announced that Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS) has agreed to purchase multiple licenses of Silicon Perspective's First Encounter(TM) SoC design system for Vitesse's California and Colorado design centers.

The teams at Vitesse will enhance their existing design flow with the addition of First Encounter for the hierarchical implementation of large system-on-chip (SoC) designs. First Encounter easily integrates into Vitesse's established methodology and delivers the ability to create a full-chip physical prototype for the largest SoC designs through front-end floorplanning, placement and in-place optimization (IPO). The prototype is used to partition the chip in blocks and create optimal pin assignment and timing budgets for each block. Top-level optimization for final timing closure will also be completed through First Encounter.

``First Encounter complements Vitesse's existing design flows by enabling our designers to quickly create the whole chip prototype to use as the basis for partitioning the chip in hierarchical blocks,'' stated Scott Hamm, vice president of design engineering and technology development at Vitesse. ``The blocks created by First Encounter are of a manageable size for our existing design flow, resulting in a predictable implementation schedule. Our design teams have also experienced significant time savings in top-level optimization with First Encounter compared to the current buffer insertion tools.''

First Encounter will let Vitesse's design teams look at the big picture of the whole chip from the start of their design process when they are assembling a mixture of RTL blocks, macros, third-party IP and ``black box'' IP. As the design progresses, the Vitesse teams will be able to update this picture on a daily basis if necessary because First Encounter is based on a very fast run-time database that makes quick iterations possible.

``The purchase by Vitesse is another strong endorsement for Silicon Perspective's hierarchical design solution,'' stated Ping Chao, president and CEO of SPC. ``Vitesse reiterated a message we have heard several times: Multiple existing design tools deliver block-level implementation but First Encounter stands out when it comes to full-chip hierarchical design.''
